By Andrew Collins. For many years a traditional bastion of conservatism, like its Southern neighbors, North Carolina has changed considerably in recent years in terms of its attitudes toward and popularity among gays and lesbians. As younger, more tolerant, and more politically progressive residents continue to move here, a number of communities have developed increasingly visible LGBT communities. My advice is to go with your conscience, and if you do decide to visit North Carolina while this ugly law is in place, go ahead and be visible, patronize the hundreds of highly gay-supportive businesses throughout the state, and help support your LGBT allies around the state. The largest city, Charlotte, remains relatively more conservative Gov. Pat McCrory is that city's former mayor than the southeast's largest metro region, Atlanta, but it's definitely changing, especially in trendier neighborhoods like Plaza Midwood, the Davidson Arts District, and the South End.

Where Are the Gay Neighborhoods in Chapel Hill & Durham, North Carolina?
I moved here from Miami to begin a graduate program at Duke, and one of my biggest concerns as a baby-gay moving to the South was whether or not I would be the only queer in town, floating haplessly along like lonely gay tumbleweed. And with good reason; queers are everywhere in Durham, busy being all kinds of awesome. Especially food-related things. So here goes. It has a small dance floor and a backyard area with lawn chairs, frisbees, and most importantly cornholing.
The Triangle area is a progressive, dynamic and diverse place to live for LGBT individuals and families. For ten years Carrboro was led by a gay mayor, Mike Nelson, and currently, Chapel Hill has its first openly gay mayor, Mike Kleinschmidt. Chapel Hill and Carrboro, along with its sister city of Hillsborough, are the major towns in Orange County. The parade and festival are the culmination of a multi-day celebration that includes a drag show at a local bar, followed by receptions, happy hours and dance parties throughout the Triangle region, and concludes with church services, lunch and music concerts.
