I remember the first bikini I ever bought. It was bright blue, a standard formation of triangles and the strings that connected them, a moose embroidered in the corner. And though I bought a medium top and large bottoms, I felt like maybe the label would absolve the fact that I was buying a larger size. It was the brand favored by the cool kids, the blonde and skinny girls in my middle school whose friendship I so desperately wanted. And I thought the suit would inspire me to work out more and to say no to the gooey chocolate-chip cookies in my school cafeteria. It did none of these things, for the record.
